    Mike Mitchell, AIA

    Founding Principal

    Mike Mitchell is the founding principal of Back40 Architecture and a licensed Architect in the State of New York. He is a graduate of University College London’s Bartlett School of Architecture (M.Arch), and Chicago’s Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture (B.Arch – Cum Laude).

    Throughout his 18 years of professional experience, Mike has developed a large body of work as a senior designer leading residential, commercial, hotel, educational and master planning projects around the world. Mike trained as an Architect at Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates in NYC and London, Future Systems in London, Truex Cullins Architects in Burlington, VT and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in Chicago.

    Since incorporating Back40 in 2013, Mike has been featured as a presenter in AIA NY’s “Leading Architecture in a Changing World” series and has been selected to exhibit as a part of Gowanus by Design’s Waterworks competition. He is also a board member of Manhattan’s Community Board 2, where he serves on the Landmarks and Public Aesthetics Committee.

    In addition to practicing, Mike is an active member of the academic community. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at City University of New York and previously taught at Columbia University, Illinois Institute of Technology and Norwich University in Vermont. Mike has served as a guest critic on juries at The Bartlett, The Architectural Association, Westminster, The Glasgow School of Art, ETH Zurich, ETH Lausanne and Sci-Arc.
