A reimagined payphone for NYC
Status: Competition Entry
In 2012, Hurricane Sandy reminded New York of how valuable our public payphones can be during times of crisis. Back40’s Payphone was a submission to the NYC Reinvent Payphones Design Challenge, Back40 focused on aspects of connectivity, accessibility, safety and community support to propose a ‘smartphone for the city’. The device comprises a large flat-panel, touchscreen display that serves variously as billboard, community message board, interactive information kiosk, wifi hotspot or emergency beacon, while also incorporating an old fashioned copper, hard-wired telephone connection to ensure connectivity during power outages.
